Osaka is well renowned throughout Japan for its extremely tasty, inexpensive KONAMON (flour based ) dishes. We have listed the most popular ones below. Please give KONAMON dishes a try! We love these Osaka favorites and think you will too.
Often referred to as `Japanese pizza`, Okonomiyaki consists of batter with lots of flour, cabbage, yam and egg. You will usually have a choice of pork, meat or various seafoods (to add into the batter). Finally , it is topped with a special sauce, mayonnaise, katsuo-bushi (dried fish shavings) and aonori (finely grated dried seaweed). It is grilled on teppan (iron plate) right before you eyes.
Takoyaki is the #1 street food in Osaka. A little Takoyaki stand can be found just about anywhere in Osaka.
Takoyaki (meaning grilled octopus) is a batter of flour, egg, diced octopus, chopped scallions and other ingredients. It is grilled in cast iron, circular shaped molds. (Served piping hot with a same kind of toppings as Okonomiyaki.)
Yakisoba is another local favorite in Osaka. It consists of stirfried noodles with lots of veggies, such as cabbage, onions, greenpappers, carrots and sprouts. You can choose between pork, beef, or seafoods as your prefer. Yakisoba is seasoned with salt, pepper and a special sauce. It is topped with katsuo-bushi, aonori, and red ginger.
Kitsune Udon was born about 130 years ago in Osaka...and has been a favorite ever since.
It is a perfect dish when you want something quick and light. Kitusne udon is topped with a piece of fried, sweetened tofu and chpped scallions. Many small noodle shops throughout Osaka, each with their own special broths and handmade noodles, serve bowls of hot kitsune udon.
